Other licensed professions

Another license, the same first week

Every board has its own forms. The early weeks look alike: a letter, a deadline, a request for your side. I handle them for these four, and I will say so if your license is outside my work.

  • Pharmacists

    • Dispensing errors and recordkeeping

    • Controlled-substance audits

    • Supervision of technicians

  • Real estate agents and brokers

    • Complaints from clients and other agents

    • Trust-account and escrow questions

    • Advertising and disclosure issues

  • Contractors and tradespeople

    • Home-improvement complaints

    • Unlicensed-work allegations

    • Bond and insurance questions

  • Teachers and school staff

    • Certificate reviews after a district report

    • Background-check findings

    • Renewals and reinstatements

Any board

The envelope is the beginning of a file.

Whatever the profession, I start with three questions. What does the board say you did, by what date must you reply, and what can it do about it?

Then I ask for the board's file, read what it holds and tell you what I would say and what I would leave out.

Before you call about another license

My license is not on your list.

Call anyway. The process is similar across boards, and if another lawyer is a better fit, I will say so.

The complaint came from a customer, not the board.

Boards usually open a file after a complaint from a client, a colleague or an employer. It can feel like a customer dispute, but the board treats it as its own matter.

Do I need a lawyer for a renewal?

If the application asks about discipline, arrests or investigations, answer it carefully. Send me the question first.
